Dichotomous Thinking
I read yesterday about the problem with dichotomous thinking, which is a reference to black and white thinking, you know when something is either all good or all bad, and then it got me thinking about how I've possibly been living a dichotomous life... for example something is either heart filling, sparks flying, absolute euphoric joy or it is the end of the world, and I believe when you think of life like this black and white Vs colourful vision it gets dangerous- if you get stuck in the black and white for too long it's scary and you experience life through a tinted lens, thinking that all is bad and there seems to be no end to the misery. All-or- nothing thinking they called it- and god when you get into that depressive state, your life does actually hang in the balance of all or nothing, you end up digging yourself deeper and further into the darkness blissfully unaware that the light is directly next to you.
There is a magic that exists when humans feel hope, even during the darkest moments because that means we're aware of our existence, of things, even us, not being permanent and although you may start to feel insignificant when thinking about this, it's that insignificance that makes us everything... in the grand scheme of things nothing really matters, as people say, we're on a floating rock in the middle of space but we spend our daily lives making everything, something, out of nothing, to the point where the issues we face can sometimes kill us, it's painful. If we go back to the dichotomous thinking then, if you believe that your world is crumbling around you and all you can see is black and white, maybe the insignificance, the fact that we're only here temporarily, is what you need to bring you back- to understand that although the problems we face are real, they're not who we are, the beautiful can exist besides the ugly; you're still allowed to have hope after the hundredth mistake, you're still allowed to exist, your place is still valued on this earth.
Allow pain and joy to exist at the same time, do not think life is black and white. Believe that everything in life matters, be passionate about it, but then acknowledge that nothing is permanent, nothings matters and things can change in a second. It's so amazing to just exist and to accept that things aren't going to be "perfect" all the time, experiences, mistakes, emotions, let them flow through and then let them flow away, all whilst knowing you're just here to exist and feel and trusting that they'll come back soon.
